- Hello world
- Result
- 2 words, 11 characters including the space and 10 without whitespace; estimated reading time 1 minute.
Words and Unicode characters
When available, Intl.Segmenter uses the page language to identify words, grapheme clusters and sentences. A combined emoji or accented letter can be one visible character even when it contains several code points.
Without this browser feature, words are whitespace-separated and characters are Unicode code points. The result names this fallback; sentence counts can vary with abbreviations and punctuation.
Lines and estimated reading time
Line breaks count physical text lines, including blank and trailing lines; visual wrapping does not add lines. Characters without whitespace exclude spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Reading time rounds up at 200 words per minute. It is an estimate, not a measurement of reading comprehension. Whitespace-only text has zero words and zero reading minutes.
Questions, answered.
Why does another counter disagree?
Counters differ in treatment of apostrophes, hyphens, emoji and abbreviations. The segmentation method used here is shown with the result.
Do wrapped lines count?
No. Only explicit line breaks count. A final line break creates a final empty line.
Is my text sent to an AI or server?
No. The browser counts locally, and optional exports contain statistics rather than the original text.
